History

A new Chapter was opened for the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians when the Little Flower Region gave birth to the twin provinces: Mary Immaculate, Kolkata and Little Flower, Bangalore. The Mary Immaculate Province of Kolkata was canonically erected on 9 December 2002 with Sr. Nancy Augustine as its first Provincial Superior. It had 64 members and 12 communities spread across eight dioceses: Kolkata, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal, Dumka, Khunti and Ranchi in Jharkhand, Bhagalpur in Bihar and Vijayapuram in Kerala. Proclamation of the Good News as its main thrust the province carried out its various apostolate, trusting in the power of the Lord. It initiated various activities with limited resources and personnel.

Sr. Elizabeth Packumala served the office of the Provincial Superior from 2006-2009, Sr. Molly James from 2010-2013 and Sr. Lissy Sebastian from 2014-2015. Sr. Molly James was reappointed as Provincial Superior in 2016.

Today, the province keeps growing in number, expanding its areas of mission. It focuses on reaching out to the needy and underprivileged sections of the society through its varied services. Missionary evangelization, education, caring for the young at risk, healing ministry, home for the aged and social work are some of its main activities.
